KPMG Turns to Surface Products for Office Upfits
When KPMG needed a source to help renovate their conference room, they once again turned to Surface Products for their commercial surface needs. KPMG is located in uptown Charlotte, in the Duke Energy building, the only Leed Certified Building in the Carolinas. KPMG wanted to create an elegant back splash, matching the rest of the recent renovations, for its TV alcoves in conference rooms. The space on the wall for the marble slabs was 108” wide x 65” tall and there was only a 3/4” gap at the top and sides.
The marble selected (Calcutta Borghini Extra) and used throughout the KPMG office space was chosen by Walker Zanger in New York and shipped directly to Charlotte. Because of the rarity of the materials, and the size of the back splash (essentially a full slab), there were no extra materials; leaving no margin for error in the project. In addition, Surface Products also had to decide how to attach the cladding to meet MIA standards; with one of the alcoves not permitting access behind it. Time also became a challenge since the initial plan called for Surface Products to complete the work over three weekends to prevent disruption in the office. Additionally, an open house party was scheduled to showcase the new facility, shrinking the project deadline to just 10 days. Having already completed many of the office upfits throughout the building, Surface Products was well-prepared for each challenge, and succeeded in fabricating and installing the unique surfaces to the exact specifications

Shades of Green: Charlotte Counters’ Green Initiative
With the assistance of our local power company, Surface Products recently went through a lighting upgrade. Energy United and Southpoint Solutions installed new Orion light fixtures throughout the offices and both fabrication shops. The lighting upgrade will reduce energy consumption and benefit the environment and the employees. Studies show that brighter lighting improves quality and safety. Employee morale and attendance are expected to benefit as well. Over 100 metal halide and old fluorescent fixtures were replaced with new energy efficient fluorescent units. The payback from the energy savings should be six months. The change took two days to complete and the power company is contributing with a rebate. All old fixtures are to be recycled as well. If you are interested in improving your company lighting, give us a call, and we will provide the contact information for you.
A Strategic Partnership: Core Competency and Outsourcing
More and more companies are outsourcing corporate functions that are not core company competencies. One definition of a core competency is any activity that creates or protects a competitive advantage. If facilities management or energy management is not a core competency in your business, there are considerable advantages to outsourcing. Several plant functions may be candidates for outsourcing:
- Facilities Management
- On-site Cogeneration and Combined Heat and Power Systems
- Distributed Generation
- Clean/Renewable Power Generation (for example, biomass, landfill gas, or wind)

Make the Right Choice for Your Lighting Application
Lighting accounts for about 20% of the total energy consumed in commercial buildings. Nearly every commercial building is artificially lit and lighting is a target for energy savings through the use of energy-efficient light sources and other advanced technologies. Many factors can affect lighting choices, however: the type of building, occupant traffic, and occupancy schedules. This information in this article serves as a guideline to help you evaluate these choices and how they might best fit your application.
